My Internship and the Impact of the Iran War on My Father's Business

Introduction: My role in the heart of Japan Agri Trading

My name is Matthieu, and I am currently an intern at Japan Agri Trading in Niigata. My daily life is a direct immersion into Japanese exports, where I bridge the gap between digital management and hands-on operations. I am responsible for managing the website, uploading new products, and creating content for the blog. In parallel, I actively participate in the logistics chain, from managing product listings to the rigorous packaging of international orders.

A Striking Parallel: From Japan to Cameroon

While working here, I realized that the challenges we face in Japan mirror what my own family is experiencing. My father works in Cameroon as an Operations Manager for a French forestry company. He manages timber operations in Central Africa, a sector that is currently heavily impacted by global geopolitics.

Due to tensions related to the conflict in Iran, ships carrying timber to his clients in China must now bypass entire continents. This massive detour causes transport costs to skyrocket and complicates commercial exchanges. The situation became so critical that he had to travel personally to China, accompanied by the Financial Director, the Marketing Director, and interpreters, to conduct direct negotiations and find rapid solutions to maintain operations despite the crisis.

Maintaining Trust despite the Distance

What I am learning from these two experiences is that trust is our most precious asset, but also the most fragile during times of crisis. In Niigata, every package I carefully prepare is proof of our respect for the customer waiting for their part on the other side of the world. In Cameroon, my father's commitment to crossing borders to negotiate in person shows that human relationships take precedence over numbers.

Whether it is for a vegetable transplanter, mechanical spare parts, or for shipments of raw timber, we refuse to compromise on quality despite the accumulating logistical constraints. Our commitment remains the same: transforming these global obstacles into opportunities to prove our reliability. Provide high quality products. Ultimately, ensuring excellence for the end customer is not just a commercial goal; it is a duty we share, regardless of the distance or the difficulties of maritime transport.
